About The Gold Shelf

The Gold Shelf lists children's books that won, or were honored or shortlisted for, the major children's book prizes: the Caldecott, Newbery, Geisel and Batchelder awards in the United States, the Carnegie Medals in Britain, the Governor General's Awards in Canada and the Children's Book Council of Australia awards.

We add something the official lists don't: the ages each book suits and what it is about, so you can find a good book to give a particular child.

Where the information comes from

The lists of winners come from Wikipedia and are checked against the awarding bodies' own lists. Book details and covers come from Open Library. Ages and topics are our own judgment; if you think we got one wrong, tell us.

The Gold Shelf is independent and is not connected with the American Library Association, CILIP, the Canada Council for the Arts or the Children's Book Council of Australia.
